Shelby stared into Mitch’s eyes, then lowered her gaze and wrapped her arms around herself. She’d changed Sara’s last name so it was different from hers. With Sara’s father out of her life, that had been the easiest thing she’d done. Next, she arranged for her daughter to board at pre-schools. No one who knew her ever heard her speak of a child or saw her with one. There’d been long periods of time when she didn’t dare go to her daughter and the separation had left her feeling empty. But keeping Sara a secret from Christopher was worth any cost and her actions kept her child hidden from him for the first thirty months of her life.

It hadn’t been easy trying to keep ahead of her brother. Christopher pursued her relentlessly. He enjoyed playing cat to her mouse. Each time she moved and settled in a new place, believed she was out from under his thumb, he’d appear. Not at first, not right away. He kept her on edge, never knowing when he would show up. But he always did. And when he did, he’d leave no doubt that her freedom from him was an illusion.

She didn’t know where she’d tripped up, six months ago. How he’d found out about Sara. All she knew was that he had and her worst nightmare had been realized. If she thought she could take Sara now and disappear, go where Christopher wouldn’t ever find them, she had only to recall that horrific night when he came to her apartment in France and took her child. Mitch was right. She could no longer keep Sara safe from Christopher on her own.

If her brother didn’t already know she’d betrayed him to Mitch, he soon would. He wouldn’t permit a threat to him to continue to exist. No matter how far or how fast she ran now, he would find her. He would never stop pursuing her. And when he found her, she had no doubt he’d make her wish for death long before he killed her. What would he do to Sara?

“Shelby?”

Mitch’s voice startled her from her thoughts. The hair on the back of her neck had risen and her mouth had gone dry as dust with fear. Mitch must have noticed a change in her. He reached out and gripped her chin, lifting it so she would look him in the eye. He held her in place so she could look no where else but at him.

A line on his forehead deepened and his gaze went laser sharp. “What are you thinking? What’s made you look like you just saw the devil?”

That was a fitting description of her brother. She shuddered.

“Shelby. Talk to me.”

She inhaled several deep breaths in an effort to control her emotions. “I know you can protect Sara. I know I can trust you to keep her safe.”

Mitch nodded slowly, never taking his eyes from hers. “Not just Sara. I’ll protect you too.”

Yes, he’d make sure his witness remained safe to testify.
